Why is Nason Hospital conducting a major gifts campaign?

Nason Hospital is conducting a major giving program to preserve andf improve the high quality care now provided to our area for ourselves, our children, our grandchildren and our elderly.

Why is expansion and renovation needed?

While cherishing and protecting the characteristics of Nason Hospital that best represent our past, it is essential to the ongoing vitality of the hospital that we continue to invest in capital improvements and advancements that will better provide for the needs of our patients and their families. A strategic study, which included interviews with many physicians and staff, indicated that expanded facilities with qualified staff to be the most important consideration for a capital campaign. Most felt that the expansion of facilities with the purchase of equipment necessary to provide health services was most important. Interviewees were in agreement that residents in the region would support the hospital in its efforts to provide quality care close to home.

How will my support help?

Your support will help to continue the high quality heath care we now have for future generations by updating and expanding our facility and providing new technologies. Nason Hospital is committed to accomplishing this at the lowest possible cost. However, sufficient money is not available through current patient charges and borrowing capacity is limited. Therefore, community support will be critical to our future viability. We must keep our health system open to serve all residents of the area. You gift now is an investment in the future of your family, neighbors, friends and yourself.

Why does the hospital need to continue recruiting physicians and other health care professionals to this community?

Hospitals today exist in a changing healthcare environment that is extremely competitive. Physician recruitment is the most competitive. Communities depend upon hospitals and hospitals depend upon doctors and staff to survive. Because a physician can establish a practice almost any place of his or her choosing, it is essential during the next decade to have an aggressive and effective recruitment program. Such a program is an art that is both complicated and expensive. A key factor that helps attract quality healthcare professionals is up-to-date facilities and technology.

With the current economic climate in the region served by the hospital, why should we make an investment in Nason Hospital?

Nason Hospital is an indicator of the economic climate. As one of the largest employers in the area, the success and growth of the health system contributes to the future growth and success of the surrounding area. If communities permit their health system to deteriorate, they will not be able to recruit the medical professionals who have the trust of the people they serve. According to industry experts, there is a growing number of community hospitals in serious financial trouble. We do not want to become one of these hospitals.

Why can't patient revenues or taxes pay for the project?

Nason Hospital's programs and facilities are supported solely by patient revenue. We are neither a county owned facility, nor a tax district organization, and therefore no tax support is provided. Currently, Nason's revenues are 50% commercial insurance, 42% Medicare, 7% Medicaid and 1% Private Pay. Medicare and Medicaid generally pay 51 cents for every dollar of charged services. Additionally, the scheduled increases in these reimbursements are well below our cost increases. Therefore, it is essential to secure other outside sources.

How much money is the campaign trying to raise?

A philanthropic feasibility study was conducted to determine the hospital's potential for private giving. The study indicated that with involvement of proper leadership and an effective information program, a campaign base goal of $1.5 million, and a challenge goal of $3 million was attainable from immediate, pledged, in-kind and deferred gifts over the next three to five years. The hospital Board of Directors believes that area residents and businesses will rally behind this very important regional effort and this goal can be achieved.

Why are area citizens and businesses asked to help provide for the needs of Nason Hospital?

Nason Hospital is operated as a non-profit facility. Its business-oriented board and administration manage this institution with a policy of fiscal responsibility. Board members are non-compensated volunteers. Cost-effective management has made it possible for the facility to expand and to meet ongoing community needs. This includes growth in the skill and numbers of staff, as well as an increase in programs and services. Contributions from the public will help assure that we are providing the finest health care at the lowest possible rates.

How much should I give?

Giving is a highly personal matter, and only you can determine the amount of support you wish to give. No one can, and no one should, make that decision for another person. Each of us is different. We have varying incomes and widely different financial responsibilities and interests. What you do during this campaign will demonstrate the value you place on having quality health care available locally.
